SANDVIK INSURANCE AGENCY'S FIRE SAFETY TIPS
October is Fire Prevention Month. It’s a good time to pause and educate yourself on fire safety. According to the Red Cross, each year more than 2,500 people die and 12,600 are injured in house fires in the United States, with direct property loss estimated at $7.3 billion annually. House fires are preventable so take action to keep you and loved ones safe by following these tips.

  1. Smoke Detectors — get in the habit of checking the alarm on smoke detectors monthly and replacing batteries twice a year. Smoke detectors should be installed in every bedroom and on all levels
  1. Fire Escape Plan — it’s important to create and practice a fire escape plan. Explore alternate escape routes in case the fire is blocking the main exit. If you have small children, National Fire Prevention Agency (NFPA) has an escape planning grid http://www.nfpa.org/safety-information/for-consumers/escape-planning/basic-fire-escape-planning which may help them better understand what they should do and where they should go
  1. Cooking — when using a stovetop, always stay in the kitchen and if you have to leave (even for a brief moment) turn it off. Always stay in your house when you’re using the oven, checking it regularly. It’s also important to keep items that are flammable such as potholders and towels away from the stove

   4. Space Heaters — the number of residential fires typically peeks December          through February, mostly due to the increase in usage of space heaters.                Always read and follow the directions and keep it at least three feet from              anything flammable. Never place a space heater near a bed or in a spot                where a child or pet could easily knock it over

   5. Fire Extinguishers — a fire extinguisher is a good tool when a fire is                 contained in a small area and used after the fire department has been called.         The NFPA says to remember PASS when using an extinguisher.
               Pull the pin
              Aim low
Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly
Sweep the nozzle from side to side

Did you know there is a shelf-life on fire extinguishers? Check to make sure yours isn’t expired by looking at the date on the gauge.

   6. Teaching Fire Safety — teach kids the facts so they know how to protect            themselves.

  • Cover mouth and nose with clothing to make it easier to breath while getting out of the house
  • Crawl and stay low to the ground as smoke rises, making it more difficult to breathe
  • Never touch a doorknob as it could be extremely hot; instead touch the door — if it’s hot do not open as it means there are flames on the other side
  • Never stop to gather personal belongings
  • Stop, drop and roll to extinguish a fire on clothing
  • Call 9-1-1 in case of an emergency

Being prepared is the best way to protect you and your loved ones during a fire. Share this article with family and friends so they too can help prevent fires and stay safe.

Thanks for listing out the fire extinguisher instructions. I need to get a couple of new fire extinguishers. I'll have to make sure I invest in new doors as well.

I appreciate all of your tips for fire safety and how to protect your property. I am glad you mentioned the importance of making sure your smoke detectors are working monthly. I think it would be smart to invest in a fire sprinkler system that can extinguish the fire quickly.

My wife and I feel like it is important for kids to learn how to protect themselves in the event of fire accidents, such as learning how to cover the mouth properly to prevent smoke. I do agree that it is important to learn the proper methods and techniques. Maybe I can look at acquiring services from a fire watch security service to hold a course.

Thanks for pointing out that house fires are preventable so it is important to make a fire escape plan. My husband and I want to improve the security of our two-story house for our five kids. We are hoping to find fire extinguishers on Monday that can enhance our fire suppression system.

It really helped when you said make a habit of monitoring smoke detectors weekly and replacing batteries every two years. I have a cousin who is doing a research paper this should help him, I'll share it with him. Thank you for the information about fire equipment.

Having fire extinguishers on hand would probably be helpful in lowering fire insurance premiums. I need to get a policy that has lower premiums. I'll have to talk to an agent about my options.

It's great that you elaborated on fire safety and how we could keep our family safe. My sister just moved into another house a few days ago, and it looks like it didn't come with firewalls or any smoke detectors. I believe my sister will want to know how to detect and stop a fire from spreading if necessary, so I'll share your tips with her now. I appreciate your insight on fire prevention and how many lives are lost to house fires.

It helped when you said that twice a year is the best time for changing the batteries of your smoke detectors. My uncle mentioned to me last night that they are planning to have a fire alarm system installed in their business workplace for safety purposes and peace of mind, and he asked if I had any idea what would be the best option to do. Thanks to this instructive article, I'll be sure to tell him that it will be much better if they consult a trusted fire alarm system installation service as they can provide more information about the process of installation.

My friend wants to make sure that he protects his business from fires. It makes sense that having the right kind of fire extinguishers would be important. I can see how it would also be important to get the proper training, too.

It was interesting when you mentioned that fire extinguishers are good to use when fires are contained in small areas. I would think that it would be important to make sure that the extinguishers are located in the right locations. A fire safety company could help you with placing an extinguisher.

Thanks for pointing out that checking the alarm on the smoke detectors monthly should be done as well as replacing their batteries at least twice a year. I will keep that in mind once I have some installed and get the fire sprinklers repaired in the house that I moved into. It will give me peace of mind regarding the safety of my kids and I when we are alone at home, since we can never know when an incident can happen.

It really helped when you said that having a fire extinguisher would be good to have when there is a tire to contain in a small area. I guess we should look for fire protection services to recommend products for our new home to protect the property from incidents like that. It might be necessary for our safety as well, because there have been incidents of wildfire years ago after researching the area.

Thanks for mentioning that you should check your smoke alarms monthly. I just started a new school year, but I've noticed that the fire doors in my school have a bit of a gap. I'd like to buy some filler pieces so that's not a risk for the students.

It was interesting to know that the increase in usage of space heaters is the common reason for residential fires. My friend wants to ensure that their home is safe from fire. I should advise him to look for a contractor that can install the best home fire protection for them.

I appreciate you mentioning that smoke detectors should develop the practise of having their alarms checked weekly and having their batteries changed twice a year. For everyone's protection, I want a smoke detector at my office. To acquire assistance, I'll make a call to the fire department service.
